Sod Installation Process

Booking for Spring 2026

Existing Lawn Removal

Prior to removing the sod, we obtain clearance from Ontario One Call, and our team marks potential hazards such as sprinkler heads.

An average sod installation requires we remove between 1″ to 4″ of old grass, roots, soil and rocks. Depending on property accessibility, this will be completed by a sod cutter or skid steer.

Grass around sprinklers, patios, driveways, garden beds, and trees is manually removed using hand tools to ensure nothing is damaged. Debris is loaded onto our trailer, truck, or bin and disposed of off-site.

Topsoil Delivery

Sod farmers will jokingly call themselves “dirt farmers” because of how important the soil is for growing strong, healthy grass.

Unlike most landscape companies that use any type of soil, we pride ourselves on using tested, quality triple-mix. This blend of finely screened topsoil, peat moss, and manure compost slowly releases nutrients for your developing sod.

An average sod installation requires 1–4 cubic yards of soil for every 1,000 square feet of area being sodded. This amount can vary based on the level of grading needed.

Levelling & Grading

Having a properly graded, level lawn is aesthetically pleasing, makes mowing and maintenance earlier, creates a safe area for play, and allows for proper drainage away from home, pool, etc.

After evenly spreading the soil, our team carefully grades the area, eliminating bumps and low spots, and ensures consistent topsoil coverage throughout the entire surface. To pack down the fresh soil and ensure it’s level, we roll (not tamp) the area with a lawn roller.

Starter Fertilizer Application

A full application of 10-25-10 starter fertilizer is applied to the soil prior to installing sod. This high-phosphorus, granular formulation promotes rapid rooting of your newly laid lawn while allowing for a slow release of nutrients consistently.

To keep your grass looking its best long after installation, it’s critical that you feed your lawn. We provide clients with a fertilizer guide that includes a schedule tailored to our region of Southern Ontario, along with formulation recommendations for each season.

Same-Day Cut Sod

Our Kentucky Bluegrass and Tall Fescue sod comes from turfgrass farms across Southern Ontario that are certified by the NSGAO. After a 24-month growing process, farmers harvest rolls of sod in the early morning, between 3 and 7 a.m., to ensure they are ready for same-day installation at your property.

We guarantee that every sod roll is of the highest quality and free from weeds, pests, tears or rips, root damage, and thinning.

Sod Installation

“Greenside up” is a joke shared amongst landscapers installing sod, but there are steps our team must follow to ensure no gaps or seams are visible once the lawn has taken root. Our team lays the sod in a staggered, brick-like pattern, ensuring the pieces are tucked tight without any overlap, and trimming is done around garden beds, patios, driveways, sidewalks, etc.

Using a lawn roller, the newly laid sod is rolled to remove any air pockets, helping the roots adhere to the soil. The grass is then given a deep watering. Irrigation systems are tested to ensure all areas are efficiently watered.

Final Inspection

After completing the sod installation, we walk our clients through a final inspection to ensure they are satisfied with their new lawn before cleaning up the property and removing any leftover debris.

We provide our clients with a sod care guide that includes information on watering, mowing, and maintenance. This guide covers both the establishment period (the first four weeks) and long-term lawn care.
