Frequently Asked Questions
When is the best time to seed my lawn?
The best time to seed in Oakville, Burlington, and the surrounding areas is early spring or early to mid-fall. Cooler temperatures and a bit more rainfall help grass seed germinate quickly and develop strong, deep roots, which leads to a healthier lawn over time. Fall seeding is especially effective, as the grass grows vigorously before going dormant for winter and then takes full advantage of spring’s ideal conditions. That said, with proper care, you can seed your lawn at any time of the year, even during the winter.
How often should I fertilize my lawn?
A standard fertilizer schedule we recommend consists of a total of three 25-5-10 slow-release fertilizer applications in early Spring, early Summer, and late Summer to help grass emerge from dormancy, promote root growth, and strengthen it against summer stresses such as heat and drought. A final application of 20-5-20 slow-release fertilizer is applied in late Fall to support root growth, prepare the lawn for dormancy, and aid spring greening.
Why And When Should I dethatch my lawn?
Thatch is a layer of organic material (e.g., dead grass and roots) that accumulates at the base of your lawn. While a thin layer is beneficial, excessive buildup blocks airflow, suffocating the lawn, and slows water absorption, leading to evaporation and fungus growth. A dethatcher, sometimes called a power rake, combs the lawn and lifts thatch using metal tines. Because the process can be stressful on the lawn, it is recommended to dethatch in Spring or Fall to allow time for recovery.
Why And When Should I aerate my lawn?
Lawns can become compacted over time due to foot traffic, machines (e.g., mowers), and children or pets playing, which can prevent oxygen, water, and nutrients from reaching the root system. Core aeration uses an aerator with tines to remove small plugs of soil, relieving compaction. It is recommended to aerate in Spring or Fall to avoid overstressing the lawn, and the core plugs should be left to naturally break down.
